from the mist

my heart broke
into a million unresolved pieces
when I saw, for the nth first time
that face jump out from the mist

A thread, barely there
translucent and blue
pierced me and tied me down
tied me up
tied me into a braid
and I didn’t notice when it happened

As if in a solipsistic fantasy
focus gave birth to reality
and suddenly all the roads walked in solitude
all the one offs, the happenstance
everything coalesced into a path of inevitability
a torrent of facts and truths became.

All of that, a full life —
a reification of reflections
because a face jumped out
like a fish might in troubled waters
while my eyes wandered about.
